Music and Art In Your Backyard

Rebels With A Cause
Iapetus Records Brings Together A Collection of Artists That Defy Genres

It's nothing new to hear that Africa is blowing up in a major way when it comes to music and art. It is perhaps no surprise that we can identify their distinct beat and rhythm that is quintessentially African. What we might not expect are genre defying artist like Yugen Blakrok (whose's music we featured here) and Robo the Technician, a household name in South Africa. Both of these musicians provide a different perspective to African music. They join seven other music innovators under the record label, Iapetus Records, a collective that creates their own unconventional sound. Iapetus' commandments are simple: Music should be uncompromising and free from corporate influence. The sound of east artist under this label is testament to that philosophy. As a collective, Iapetus has shared the stage with some of music's greatest creators and performers: Public Enemy, Black Thought, Mos Def, and Dead Prez. With such a pedigree of associations under their belt, Iapetus is clearly doing something right. Some of favorites artist from the label are:

Yugen Blakrok

An honest spitting emcee whose music blends the gothic and the futuristic with a strong awareness of the ills of contemporary culture; all of which is glazed with a touch of manga.

Robo the Technician

The technician has been on the scene for about two decades and in that time performed with some of the biggest hip-hop veterans in the business. His beats keep to the tradition of old school hip hop and his lyrics remain conscious of the socio-political landscape.

Zetina Mosia

Silky smooth vocals over modern jazz beats, with inspiration pulled from other genres, is where you will find Zetina doing her best work. At such a young age, her music exudes a maturity that is older and well lived than her peers.
