As 2016 gets into full swing, I am eager to see some of the new musicians and bands that will evolve and come of age. With free music week rounding off this weekend in Austin, all music lovers are looking ahead to March for what indie music acts SXSW will lure to the City. Who will blow my mind this year? It's hard to say but I can definitely tell you the records that were on a loop for me in 2015.
ANGELA BASSETT BY MAGNA CARDA
If this was a vinyl, there would chips and grooves from how much I played it to death. From bouncing out to it in my bedroom to lip syncing on the bus. This tune has so much attitude, I just can't handle it. Not only does it perfectly encapsulates Bad Girl Confidence but it will make you shed swagger like it was second skin. You can listen to this one non-stop on iTunes!
COME ON HOME BY BLUE BEAR
I have a soft spot in my heart for folk music but it takes a special kind to make you weep like emotions were flowing from every single one of your pores. Blue Bear's record, Vacations, does just that. For me, it was the carefully crafted harmonies of Come on Home that really sealed the deal. I am incredibly hyped to see what these dudes produce in 2016. Hang on to your hearts folks.
PUSSY KILLS BY ROCKY RIVERA
Rocky Rivera is definitely a break-through artist not just for 2015. She continuously shows that spitting rhymes is not just a man's game but a weapon of choice for all musically talented women. Pussy Kills is full on feminist, gloves-off anthem that will empower you! Get those eyebrows on fleek and press play, and hold on tight for some powerful and provocative rhymes.
SHINE THEM SHOES BY THE TYE TRYBE
“If Choward’s Violet Candies, Prince, and MC5 had a baby that listened to happy Black Sabbath and Unicorn Laugh Tracks, it would be us. That’s the power of pine-sol.” Yup! That pretty much sums it up. Now go get your funk on!
SAYONARA MY LOVER BY GIRL IN A THUNDERBOLT
This was my jam earlier in 2015. This is the foundation of Brit-rock at its finest and rawest. Maria's voice is so beautiful and gritty, pulling you into her every word and feeling. And lord, those guitar riffs! Now this is a cheat track. Officially this EP was out in late 2014 but before it really got growing on me it was 2015. So I am officially naming this as part of my ultimate top 5 for 2015.
